Railay Beach Sightseeing and Activities 2022

Aktualisiert: 19. Sept. 2022

Only a few meters away from Ao Nang is Rai Leh. You can only reach Railay Beach by boat. This blog post will explain why you should plan the day trip or maybe even a few nights in Railay.

Railay is one of the most spectacular destinations in the south of Thailand. It is due to the many beautiful spots, activities, restaurants and bars in a small area. High times it can even be hard to get a room as there are only a few accommodations. We must say in advance that in Railay, prices for housing, food and drink are sometimes 2-3 times higher than elsewhere on the mainland. So choose your hotel carefully if you want to spend the night there. A day trip from Ao Nang by longtail boat was enough for us. This peninsula of Thailand is also very crowded during the day. So it speaks for spending the night there so you can enjoy the beautiful nature in the morning and evening in peace.

Sights

We start our tour at Ao Nang Beach. Then, at the Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club, you can book your ticket for the public longtail boat ride to Railay. The ticket costs 200 baht for the way there and back. The boat departs as soon as enough people with access are in line (8-10). Once in Railay, the boat docks at West Beach. All sights in Railay are close to one another. Probably the longest route takes a maximum of 20 minutes.

Railay Beach West

So let's start with West Beach. The beach is beautiful, but since almost all boats dock here, you will constantly hear the loud engine noise and encounter large groups of tourists. If that doesn't scare you off, there are several restaurants and beach bars right on the beach. We got two delicious shakes at the Hawkeye Restaurant and then strolled through the town.

Railay Beach East

If you follow the main path and turn right behind the Kohinoor Indian Restaurant, you will reach East Beach. It is not suitable for swimming and not too nice because of the jetty and the mangroves. The water is dirty, and the ground is muddy.

Railay View Point

Our first stop was the Railay View Point, which you reach via East Beach. The view is reminiscent of the viewpoints on Koh Phi Phi and is well worth it. Please don't overestimate yourself. The steep climb there will challenge your climbing skills. After the rain, our first two sights are difficult to reach. Clay covers the limestone rocks. It is too slippery when wet but also provides some grip when dry. Safety first and sturdy shoes!

Railay Princess Lagoon

You thought wrong if you think it is no longer difficult after the viewpoint. On the way to Princess Lagoon, you must rope down an almost 90° wall for the last meters. It is the most challenging part, and you should only do it if you are physically fit enough to climb back up. If you don't feel up to it, there is no shame. You will meet many visitors who are also the other way around. In October 2018, an American fell on this trail. He died after sustaining severe injuries, and there have also been other reports of serious injuries. We don't want to scare you off, but be aware of the danger of rocks breaking or ropes snapping. If you want to be on the safe side, you can book a climbing tour (incl. equipment) to the lagoon in town.

Phra Nang Beach

Probably the most beautiful beach in Railay is Phra Nang Beach. You can reach it after a 17-minute walk from West Beach. Many tourists will visit during the day, so it's worth coming early or late. The massive limestone rocks and the turquoise water provide a beautiful view and a great ambience.

Phra Nang Cave Shrine / Princess Cave

You will find Phra Nang Cave Shrine at the beach's southern end. There are many stories about this place. According to one report, an Indian princess drowned during a shipwreck off the coast many centuries ago. Her spirit sought refuge in this cave. The locals, especially fishermen and sailors, visit this place to make offerings, which are supposed to ensure fertility and a good journey. Some tourists must smile when they see these offerings but see for yourself.

Diamond Cave

You will find Diamond Cave or Phra Nang Nai Cave at the northern end of Railay. It is a relatively small cave with large stalactites and stalagmites, which you will encounter on the way there. The entrance fee is 100 baht.

Kayaking

Due to the beautiful limestone cliffs surrounding Railay Beach, renting a kayak and exploring the area is incredibly worthwhile. There are even providers with transparent kayaks, allowing you to discover the underwater world without snorkelling.

Climbing courses

On the peninsula, there are many providers of climbing courses or tours. These are very popular there, as the area is known for its breathtaking climbing routes. If we had more time, we definitely would have gone climbing. However, the view from one of the giant limestone rocks still excites us today.

Restaurants & Bars

Railay is not known for many good restaurants, but there are even better reggae bars where you can relax very well.

Bamboo Bar

We had a great time at Bamboo Bar on the main street near West Beach. Here you will find a chill atmosphere, live music, friendly owners and guests and delicious cocktails.

Skunk Bar

Skunk Bar is another popular bar 130 meters away. This one doesn't shine with its food but serves cool drinks in a relaxed atmosphere.

Tew Lay Bar

Probably the most popular bar on Railay, it is located at the eastern end of the resort and offers delicious Thai and European food and cocktails. In addition, it is in a beautiful location with breathtaking views - a place to linger.

As for restaurant recommendations, unfortunately, we don't have any personal suggestions. However, we would choose the Railay Family Restaurant, the Kohinoor Indian Restaurant or the Summer Fresh.
